I would like say to a massive thank you to all those who have helped me on my journey towards a greener future, of which there are a great many. But in particular; my brother Garry, mentors Alastair Sawday and Martin Sandbrook, as well as Alex Minshull, Justin Woolford, Paul Rainger and Mukti Mitchell.

Hi.

My aim is to help create a fairer, more environmentally conscious world through collaboration and commitment to a low carbon future. That future must be hope led, not fear driven and it is achievable only if we combine our efforts.

I work collaboratively. offering my time (for free where appropriate), knowledge and expertise to help achieve collective impact. I specialise in strategy development, project management and organisational change.

A bit more about me...

I studied mechanical engineering at Swansea University and in 1990 joined the Royal Air Force as an Engineering Officer. After a stint in the private sector with British Aerospace, I returned to the public sector, working with central and local government before going freelance as a project manager.

My sustainability journey started in 2004 as a board member for Sustainability South West, a charity set up to assess and support the Regional Development Agency in carbon accounting. I went on to become the manager of the Bristol Green Capital Partnership, helping the city enter and win the EU Green Capital Award for 2015.

More recently, I have been a Board Member and manager of the Bristol Community Land Trust with responsibility for sustainable development. I was also co-founder of Bristol's BIG Green Week, and have been parliamentary candidate for The Green Party.

Previous Job Roles

  • 2017: Project Manager for Bristol Community Land Trust, leading the build of 50 sustainable, affordable housing units in Lockleaze Bristol.
  • 2011: Manager – Bristol Green Capital Partnership, project managed the team that won European Green Capital 2015
  • 2009: Manager – Bristol Local Strategic Partnership, producing the Bristol 2020 City Strategy
  • 2007: Government Office South West Locality Manager for Gloucestershire, acting as Flood Recovery Manager following the 2007 disaster.
  • 2001: Home Office Regional Crime & Drugs Manager, responsible for policy, performance management and liaison with regional Forces.
  • 1996: BAE Systems Safety Analyst & Project Manager working on the Nimrod RMPA project
  • 1990: RAF Engineering Officer, responsible for front line and support tasks for Hercules and Tornado.

Previous Projects

Big Green Week

For 5 years Big Green Week was Europe's biggest festival of sustainability. In partnership with Bristol Natural History Consortium and many others, we hosted hundreds of events from mass gatherings at huge food festivals to small creative workshops & talks.

Bristol Green Capital Partnership

One of the UK's oldest and biggest sustainability partnerships, the BGCP coordinated and facilitated grass roots action across the region. In 2013, working with Bristol City Council, I managed the project team that led the successful bid to be named European Green Capital City 2015.

Le COP Crusade 2015

With the help of sponsors Your Group, Natracare, Sustain and Grn Bikewear, I led a group of cyclists to Paris in November 2015 to fly the flag for Bristol at the 21st Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP21).

As 2015 European Green Capital, Bristol was invited to co-host a ‘cities lounge’ inside COP 21. Their aim was to raise the city’s profile and to seek investment.

But it was also incredibly important for Bristol to be represented outside the wire as part of the hundreds of thousands of groups campaigning for action. Our riders attended a variety of business conferences, activist summits, debates and gatherings on your behalf.

Chains of Love 2016

In the run up to Valentines’ Day 2016, I commissioned a series of short films designed to highlight the disconnect between consumer’s feelings (of love, presumably!) for the person they are purchasing gifts for, and their lack of feeling for the people producing the gifts.

Referencing Bristol’s history as a global trading port, built on the backs of slaves, this project sought to highlight the modern day slavery that still exists all over the world. Simply put, buying Fair-trade ensures that producers are treated fairly and paid a living wage, animals experience a higher standard of welfare, and production practices are more likely to be environmentally sustainable.
